NFL Preseason Predictions: Will Jets vs. Lions fall under total? 8/19/17
Will the Jets and Lions fall under the betting total tonight when the two teams meet in Detroit at 7:30PM ET?
The Matchup: Jets vs. Lions, 7:30PM ET, Ford Field
According to oddsmakers, the Lions opened as 5.5-point home favorites versus the Jets for tonight’s preseason game. That’s currently where the line stands. As for the total, the number hit the board at 38 but has been bet down to 37.5.
New York Jets
New York won its preseason opener last week, defeating the Tennessee Titans 7-3 in East Rutherford. The Jets scored on their opening possession, marching 78 yards in just eight plays. That was the team’s only score on the night.
Christian Hackenberg was 18-of-25 for 127 yards for the Jets, although his average pass went just 5.1 yards. Starter Josh McCown was three-of-four passing for 72 yards and the line touchdown, which went to Charone Peake. Peake’s touchdown was also his lone reception on the night. Robby Anderson, meanwhile, caught three passes for 71 yards.
Detroit Lions
Detroit also won its preseason opener last Sunday, beating the Colts 24-10 in Indianapolis. Jake Rudock threw two touchdown passes to Kenny Golladay, leading the Lions to victory. Rudock finished the game 13-of-21 for 142 yards and those two scores.
As for starter Matthew Stafford, he attempted just three passes. He completed two of those passes for 36 yards but he was also intercepted. Dwayne Washington lead the Lions in rushing yards with 34 on six carries. Golladay finished with three receptions and 53 yards with those two scores.
Our Prediction
This should be a low-scoring affair. After parting with Eric Decker and Brandon Marshall this offseason, plus losing Quincy Enunwa to a season-ending injury, the Jets have one of the least-talented offenses in the NFL. New York still has some solid players on defense, however, so while Detroit scored 24 points last week in Indianapolis I don’t think they’ll match that total tonight.
