MLB Predictions: Is the under a good bet when Cards host Dodgers? 5/31/17

Pirates vs Cardinals

Is the under a good bet tonight in St. Louis where the Cards will host the Dodgers at 8:15PM ET?

The Odds: Dodgers vs. Cardinals, 8:15PM ET, Busch Stadium

According to oddsmakers, the Cards are -140 money line favorites. That makes the Dodgers +130 money line underdogs to pull off the upset in St. Louis. As for the over/under, the number sits at 8 runs.

The Pitching Matchup: Hyun-Jin Ryu (Dodgers) vs. Carlos Martinez (Cards)

Ryu will make the start for the Dodgers, who spilled Alex Wood’s spot in the rotation due to SC joint inflammation. Ryu made an appearance last Thursday in a game started by Kenta Maeda. He earned his first career save in the process. Ryu threw four innings of scoreless ball against the Cardinals. His ERA sits at 4.28 and his WHIP is 1.50 in 40 innings this season.

Meanwhile, Martinez will toe the rubber for the Cards. After a sluggish start to his season, Martinez is 3-4 and owns a 3.32 ERA. The numbers don’t tell the entire story, however, because the ace has been excellent of late. He allowed three runs in 7 1/3 innings and struck out nine last Friday in a loss to the Rockies.

Our Prediction: Will Dodgers and Cards fall under betting total?

So why haven’t the Cardinals won when Martinez has been dominant? Because of their offense. They have averaged just 3.6 runs per game in his starts this season. Two starts ago, Martinez pitched nine shutout innings against the Giants, who scrapped together three runs in extra innings to pull off the victory. St. Louis’ offense has been punchless for most of the season.

Also, the under is 4-0 in Ryu’s last four starts against the Cardinals and is 12-5 in the last 17 meetings between these two teams in St. Louis.

Wednesday MLB Prediction: Dodgers/Cardinals under 8
