Marlins’ Chen lasts four innings in loss to Pirates
Wei-Yin Chen allowed three runs on five hits over four innings in a loss to the Pirates on Saturday. Chen wasn’t awful, allowing five hits and walking two while striking out six, but he was inefficient — he threw 86 pitches in his four innings — and Marlins manager Don Mattingly opted to pinch-hit for him in the top of the fifth inning, ending his afternoon. The abbreviated start is in stark contrast to his last time out, when he went eight strong innings in a win over the Blue Jays. The loss dropped him to 6-10 with a 4.72 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 23 starts overall. The 33-year-old southpaw has a shot at bouncing back Thursday when the Marlins face off with the lowly Mets.
Phillies’ Eflin rocked for six runs in loss to Mets
Zach Eflin was shelled for six runs on four hits over three innings Saturday in the Phillies’ blowout loss to the Mets. Eflin served up three extra-base hits, including a three-run double to Tomas Nido in second inning and a three-run tater to Todd Frazier in the third. He struck out five batters and also issued three walks. Over his last five starts, the 24-year-old right-hander owns a disastrous 7.71 ERA, 1.97 WHIP and 21/10 K/BB ratio over 23 1/3 innings of work. He was excellent in the first-half, allowing three runs or fewer in 10 of 12 starts en route to a robust 3.15 ERA and 67/14 K/BB ratio. However, he’s cratered since the All-Star break and may be in danger of losing his rotation spot if he doesn’t turn it around over the final three weeks.
