Diamondbacks’ Ray strikes out eight in no-decision vs. Giants
Robbie Ray pitched decently in a no-decision against the Giants on Sunday, racking up eight strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings of two-run baseball. The southpaw allowed a parade of baserunners — seven hits and four walks — in his 5 1/3 innings, but was able to bear down and make big pitches when he needed to the most. The damage against him came on run-scoring singles from Evan Longoria in the third inning and Nick Hundley in the sixth. He’s still striking out plenty of batters, but Ray will carry a disappointing 4.92 ERA and 1.44 WHIP into Saturday’s start against the Reds in Cincinnati.
Reds’ Harvey allows five runs in loss to Nationals
Matt Harvey surrendered five runs in four-plus innings and was charged with a loss to the Nationals on Saturday. He gave up single runs in each of the first five innings. Anthony Rendon had a pair of RBI-doubles off him, and Matt Adams led off the fifth inning with a solo homer to knock Harvey out of the game. He managed just one strikeout in the ballgame, while walking two and allowing nine base hits. It’s been a rough season for Harvey, who wasn’t able to recoup enough trade value for the Reds to unload him at the deadline as they had hoped. He could still pass through waivers and get dealt this month. He is now 5-7 with a 5.37 ERA in 19 starts and four relief appearances.
