MLB Predictions: Will Mariners vs. Rockies be low-scoring?

MLB Predictions

Interleague play heads to Denver on Memorial Day as the Rockies host the Mariners today at 3:10PM ET. Will the matchup provide a low-scoring game for bettors?

The Odds: Mariners vs. Rockies, 3:10PM ET, Coors Field

According to oddsmakers, Colorado is a -140 money line favorite to win today at home. That line, however, is the lowest you’ll find for the Rockies. On the high side, the home team is around -150 on the money line. Other books list the Rox at -144, -143, and -141, so be sure to shop around.

As for Seattle, the Mariners are a clear underdog at +130 on the money line. The M’s odds go as high as +135 depending on the sports book and as low as +129.

The over/under, meanwhile, hit the board at 11 runs and that’s where the total currently sits at most books.

The Pitching Matchup: Sam Gaviglio (Seattle) vs. Tyler Chatwood (Colorado)

Not exactly the most high-profile pitching matchup. Gaviglio goes for the M’s after allowing five runs in six innings versus the Nationals last Wednesday. Only one of those runs, however, was earned. Due to an error by shortstop Jean Segura, Gaviglio surrendered four unearned runs in the first inning. The right-hander allowed a three-run home run to Anthony Rendon in that same inning. Gaviglio now has a 1.38 ERA in 13 innings while pitching for a ravaged Seattle rotation.

On the flip side is Chatwood. The 27-year-old right-hander allowed just one hit in his last outing, as the Rockies beat the Phillies 7-2 last Wednesday. He struck out eight batters in a seven-inning shutout performance. Chatwood carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning when catcher Andrew Knapp mustered Philadelphia’s only single off the pitcher. Chatwood is now 4-6 with a 4.50 ERA and 1.33 WHIP on the season.

Our Prediction

The over is 4-0-1 in the last five meetings between these two teams in Colorado. The over is also 5-2-1 in the last eight meetings between these two teams overall.

That said, I’m bucking the trends.

The under is 3-0-1 in Chatwood’s last four starts overall and 3-1-1 in the Rockies’ last five games. It has also cashed in five straight Seattle games and is 5-0 in the M’s last five games versus a team with a winning record.

Memorial Day MLB Prediction: Mariners/Rockies under 11
