College Football Predictions: Can Boise State cover vs. New Mexico?
Can Boise State open Mountain West Conference play with a lopsided win over New Mexico when the two meet tonight at 8PM ET? Here’s our College Football Predictions for tonight’s game.
ODDS
According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Boise State is favored at home, as the Broncos are getting odds of -14.5 points against the Lobos. The over/under total is listed at 58.5 points right now. These two will meet from Albertsons Stadium in Boise, Idaho. The game will air live on ESPN.
NEW MEXICO
New Mexico is 1-1 on the season following a 30-28 loss at home to New Mexico State and a 38-14 win over Abilene Christian. The Lobos failed to cover the spread in both games. New Mexico is averaging 33 points and 455.5 yards per game on offense thus far. Lamar Jordon has thrown for 316 yards, but has two INT’s to one touchdown. Jay Griffin IV has caught seven passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns while Daryl Chestnut has run for 108 yards. On defense, New Mexico is giving up 22 points and 391 yards per game. Their run defense has also been strong, allowing just 53.5 yards per game.
BOISE STATE
Boise State is coming off a 47-44 loss to Washington State in triple OT last week to fall to 1-1 on the season. The Broncos had a 24-13 win over Troy to start the season and they have covered the spread in both of their games. Defensively, Boise State is holding opponents to 30 points and 335 yards per game. Their run defense is allowing only 49 yards per game. Boise is averaging 34 points and 379 yards on offense so far. Brett Rypien has thrown for 236 yards this year, but a head injury forced him out of last week’s game. He is questionable to play in tonight’s game. Montell Cozart has thrown for 211 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 108 yards and a score. He seems very capable of leading the offense with Rypien injured. Cedrick Wilson is the leading receiver with 13 catches for 212 yards and two touchdowns while Alexander Mattison is the leading rusher with 145 yards and two touchdowns.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL PREDICTIONS
There’s not a lot to like about New Mexico right now, but the trends are backing the Lobos. They have covered the spread in five of their last six in this series and the road team is 5-2 against the spread in the last seven meetings. Surprisingly, Boise State is just 1-9 against the spread in its last 10 home games. The Broncos could be without Rypien, which will take a little something away from the offense if the case. Stick with the trends and look for this game to be somewhat competitive.
