Padres’ Ross crumbles in loss to Pirates

Tyson Ross was tagged for seven earned runs, seven hits and three walks with no strikeouts over five innings in a loss against the Pirates on Sunday. Ross was really struggling with his location in this one, throwing just 44 of his 79 pitches for strikes, including first-pitch strikes to just 10 of the 24 batters he faced. As such, his ERA mushroomed from 3.32 to 3.78 after allowing a season-high three homers. Long balls have been a killer for him lately, yielding eight homers over his past six outings over 34 1/3 innings after serving up just five in his first 11 outings across 65 2/3 frames.

Diamondbacks’ Ray smashed by Cardinals in last start

Robbie Ray allowed six runs over five-plus innings on Monday in a loss to the Cardinals. The middle innings went well for Ray, it was the bookends that gave him trouble. He allowed four runs in the first, and then after settling down, he allowed back-to-back homers in the sixth before being pulled. He did strike out seven while putting just one run on via walk, but it’s a disappointing start that raises the southpaw’s ERA to 4.89 on the season over 38 1 / 3 innings. Ray will look to rebound when he faces the Padres on Saturday.

MLB Betting Trends

San Diego

The Padres are 10-1 in Ross’ last 11 starts coming off five days of rest.

Arizona

The Diamondbacks are just 2-8 in their last 10 home games despite winning last night.

Prediction:

Friday night’s matchup between these same teams fell well under the 7.5 total as the D-Backs ousted the Padres, 3-1. Still, I’m going to roll the dice on the over tonight. Manny Gonzalez is one of the better over umpires in the league, cashing the over in 37 of his last 56 games behind home plate with four pushes. The over is also 5-1 in Ross’ last six road starts versus the Diamondbacks and is 34-16-1 in the last 51 meetings between these two teams at Chase Field.

The Pick: Padres/Diamondbacks over 8
