NFL Week 5 Predictions: Will Seahawks pull off upset vs. Rams? 10/8/17

Falcons vs Seahawks

Will the Seahawks pull off the upset this afternoon when they visit the Rams in Los Angeles?

The Odds

According to oddsmakers, the Rams are now 1-point home favorites versus the Seahawks this afternoon. Seattle opened as a 2.5-point favorite, but the line “jumped the fence.” As for the total, the number hit the board at 46 but was bet up to 47.5.

Seattle improved its record to 2-2 on the season after rallying last Sunday night at home in a blowout victory over Indianapolis. That was the first game this season in which the Seahawks covered the spread (1-3 ATS).

As for the Rams, they’re 3-1 following their upset win over the Cowboys last Sunday in Dallas. They’re 2-2 against the spread after winning as an underdog in Week 4.

Seattle Seahawks

The Seahawks received good news on some of its injured players this week. Receiver Doug Baldwin practiced in full on Thursday and Friday, so he’ll play despite dealing with a groin injury. Tight end Jimmy Graham (ankle) also practiced in full on Thursday and Friday, as did Luke Joeckel.

That said, the Seahawks do have some players out for Sunday. Running back C.J. Prosise won’t play due to an ankle injury and defensive end Cliff Avril is out with a neck injury. Cornerback Jeremy Lane is out with a groin injury.

Los Angeles Rams

The Rams enter Week 5 relatively healthy. Defensive back Lamarcus Joyner is doubtful with a hamstring injury but other than him, Jamon Brown (groin) and Sammy Watkins (illness) should both play.

The Pick

Seattle has been a horrible bet in this series. Not only are the Seahawks 0-5 against the spread in their last five road games versus the Rams, but they’re also 3-7 at the betting window in the last 10 meetings between these two teams. Plus, the home team is 7-1 against the spread in the last eight meetings and the underdog is 10-4 ATS in the last 14 games between these two teams.

But I don’t care about the historical numbers. I care about Russell Wilson and this Seattle offense finding itself over the last four-plus quarters. Also, I believe the Seahawks will contain Todd Gurley and force Jared Goff to make high-percentage throws in tight windows, which, thus far, he has not been asked to do. I care about Wade Phillips’ defense being close to the bottom of the league in yards and points allowed.

I like the Seahawks to flex some muscle this afternoon and take back the NFC West.
