MLB Predictions: Will the Rays pull off the upset vs. Royals? 8/29/17

Astros vs. Royals

Will the Rays pull off the upset tonight against the Royals when the two teams meet at 8:15PM ET in Kansas City?

The Matchup: Rays vs. Royals, 8:15PM ET, Kauffman Stadium

According to oddsmakers, the Royals are -110 money line favorites to beat the Rays tonight in Kansas City. That makes Tampa Bay a +100 money line underdog to pull off the upset. As for the total, the number hit the board at 9.5 and that’s where it currently sits.

Tampa Bay has posted a record of 66-67 on the year and is 32-34 on the road. Over their last 10 games, the Rays are 6-4 and enter play tonight having won back-to-back games.

As for Kansas City, the Royals are really scuffling. They have scored a run in over 40 innings, have lost five games in a row and seven of their last 10. They have basically fallen out of playoff contention after putting together a strong first half.

The Pitching Matchup: Alex Cobb (TB) vs. Jake Junis (KC)

Cobb took a no-decision in his last outing, which came on August 24 against the Blue Jays. He pitched 4 1/3 innings in that game, allowed zero runs on four hits and struck out five. He’s now 9-8 on the year with a 3.69 ERA over 151 1/3 innings of work.

Junis also took a no-decision in his last start, pitching 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball against the Rockies on August 24. He struck out seven, walked one and scattered seven hits in the performance. Junis is now 5-2 with a 4.68 ERA over 57 2/3 innings this season.

Our Prediction

Kansas City is a mess. Not only has the club not scored in its last 43 innings, but pitcher Danny Duffy was arrested for DUI on Monday night. The Royals are 0-5 in their last five games, 0-4 in their last four games against the American League East, and are winless in their last four games against a right-handed starter.

The Rays, meanwhile, have won four of their last five games. They’re 4-1 in their last five games versus a right-handed starter. They’re also 4-0 in their last four games after allowing two runs or less in their previous contest.

Tuesday MLB Prediction: Tampa Bay Rays +100
