MLB Predictions: Will Phillies pull off upset vs. struggling Cards? 6/20/17

Phillies vs Cardinals

Will the Phillies pull off the upset tonight at home when they host the Cardinals at 7:05PM ET?

The Odds: Cardinals vs. Phillies, 7:05PM ET, Citizens Bank Park

According to oddsmakers, the Cardinals are -170 money line favorites to win tonight on the road. Philadelphia, meanwhile, is +150 to pull off the upset. As for the total, the number hit the board at 9 and has been bet up to 9.5.

The Pitching Matchup: Mike Leake (STL) vs. Jeremy Hellickson (PHI)

Leake enters play tonight with a 5-6 record, a 3.14 ERA, and a 1.09 WHIP. In his last outing, he pitched six innings while giving up six runs last Wednesday in a loss to the Brewers. Things got ugly for the right-hander right out the gates, as Leake surrendered six runs in the first two innings. Eric Thames hit a two-run homer in the first inning, then doubled in two more runs in the second. St. Louis has now lost four straight games in which Leake has started.

As for Hellickson, he’s 5-5 with a 4.91 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. He surrendered six runs and nine hits in five-plus innings last Wednesday against the Red Sox. After starting 5-1 with a 3.44 ERA, Hellickson is 0-4 with a 7.57 ERA in his last five starts. If Philadelphia was hoping to trade Hellickson for a decent prospect at the trade deadline, those hopes are fleeting.

Our Prediction

Despite Hellickson’s issues of late, the Phillies are worth a roll of the dice tonight against a struggling Cardinals team. St. Louis has lost 13 of its last 16 games on the road. The Cards are also just 1-5 in their last six games and have lost 10 of their last 11 on the road against a right-hadned starter.

Furthermore, the Cardinals are winless at 0-5 in Leake’s last five starts when he pitches the opener of a new series. They’re also 0-4 in his last four outings following a team loss in their previous game.

Tuesday MLB Prediction: Philadelphia Phillies +150
