MLB Predictions: Will Marlins rebound with win over Phillies? 9/1/17
Following their loss on Thursday night, will the Marlins rebound with a victory tonight against the Phillies at 7:10PM ET?
The Matchup: Phillies vs. Marlins, 7:10PM ET, Marlins Park
According to oddsmakers, the Marlins are -158 money line favorites to win tonight at home. That makes the Phillies +148 money line underdogs. The total, meanwhile, currently sits at 9 runs after opening at 9.5.
Miami is 66-67 on the year after losing last night. Over their last 10 games, the Marlins are 5-5 but have dropped four straight. They’re still 35-30 at home this season.
Philadelphia, meanwhile, resides in last place in the National League East with a 50-83 mark on the year. The Phillies have struggled all season, but mostly on the road where they are 22-46. Just like Miami, however, Philadelphia has split over its last 10 games.
The Pitching Matchup: Nick Pivetta (PHI) vs. Dillon Peters (MIA)
In his last start, Pivetta allowed three runs (two earned) over five innings last Sunday in a win over the Cubs. The 24-year-old right-hander is now 5-9 on the season with a 6.57 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP.
As for Peters, he’s coming up from Double-A Jacksonville to make his major league debut tonight. The 25-year-old fractured his thumb earlier this season but has pitched well upon returning. He boasts a 1.97 ERA and a 40/11 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 45 2/3 innings during his time in Jacksonville.
Our Prediction
Philadelphia has been a bad bet when Pivetta takes the hill. The club is 1-4 in his last five starts, 3-8 in his last 11 road outings, and are 3-7 in his last 10 starts coming off four days of rest. The Phillies are 1-4 in their last five games coming off a win as well.
Granted, Miami has struggled of late. But the Marlins are 10-2 in their last 12 home games and are 14-6 in their last 20 games versus a team with a winning percentage below .400.
Friday MLB Prediction: Miami Marlins -158
