MLB Predictions: Will Giants pull off upset vs. Diamondbacks? 9/27/17
Will the Giants pull off the upset today when they visit the Diamondbacks at 3:40PM ET?
The Odds: Giants at Diamondbacks, 3:40PM ET, Chase Field
According to oddsmakers, Arizona is -150 money line favorites to win today at home. That makes San Francisco a +140 money line underdog to pull off the upset. The total, meanwhile, sits at 10 runs.
San Francisco Giants
Jeff Samardzija will take the mound today for San Francisco. He took a loss after throwing eight innings of three-run ball Friday against the Diamondbacks. That makes five times this season that Samardzija has pitched eight innings, yet he’s won just two of those games. He struck out seven and walked none tonight. The loss was his 14th, which is a new career high for him.
Arizona Diamondbacks
The Diamondbacks will counter with Braden Shipley, who will make a spot start. That was supposed to be Zack Greinke’s final regular-season start, but he has been pushed to Friday so that he is on normal rest for the National League Wild Card Game on October 4. Shipley holds a 5.40 ERA and 1.85 WHIP in 21 2/3 innings (two starts, seven relief appearances) this season with Arizona.
Our Prediction
The Giants are 35-17 in their last 52 games in Arizona. They’re also 4-0 in their last four games when facing a right-handed starter. They’re 4-1 in Samardzija’s last five starts coming off four days of rest. They’re also 4-0 in his last four outings after allowing five runs or more in their previous game.
Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks are just 1-4 in Shipley’s last five starts. San Francisco has had a horrific season, but I see value in the Giants tonight as an underdog.
