MLB Prediction: Can the Tigers upset the Astros? 5/24/17

Mariners vs Astros

Will the Detroit Tigers avoid a third straight loss to the Houston Astros when they meet up tonight at 8:10PM ET? Here is our MLB Prediction for today’s AL contest.

THE ODDS

According to the latest oddsmakers, the Astros are the clear favorite at home, as they are getting odds of -170 to win. The Tigers are getting a money line of +155 to prevail, while the over/under total is listed at 9 runs.

PITCHING MATCHUP

The pitching matchup for today’s game has Daniel Norris (2-3, 4.81 ERA) on the mound to face Charlie Morton (5-3, 4.26) of the Astros.

Morton hasn’t been the most reliable starter for Houston in 2017. He has allowed four runs in each of his last two outings and has failed to get to the seventh in six of his nine starts. He has 59 strikeouts with 20 walks and a WHIP of 1.42.

Norris has been shaky as well for Detroit, allowing multiple run in five of his last six outings. He isn’t one to get deep into games either, allowing 21 walks and 53 hits for a WHIP of 1.72.

RECORDS

Houston has taken the first two games in this series, winning 1-0 on Monday and 6-2 on Tuesday. The home team has won six straight between these two.

Houston is now 31-15 overall and 16-9 at home while Detroit is 21-23 overall and 9-13 on the road.

TUESDAY’S RECAP

The Tigers continued to struggle in Houston on Tuesday. After being held to just one hit in Monday’s loss, they only had four last night. They also committed three errors which led to four unearned runs for Houston. Jordan Zimmerman actually pitched somewhat well, allowing just two earned runs on five hits over six innings. He just got no run support.

Lance McCullers lasted five innings, allowing just one hit with five strikeouts. Jake Marisnick had three hits to lead Houston while Juan Centeno had two. Mikie Mahtook drove in the two Detroit runs on a home run in the seventh inning.

MLB PREDICTION

The Tigers seem like they are still in Detroit, because their bats certainly haven’t arrive in Houston. That could change today with Morton on the mound, but Norris isn’t likely to fare much better against the Houston hitters. Norris has really struggled with baserunners and high pitch counts.

Detroit has already tapped deep into its bullpen this series as well, so the relievers aren’t going to provide much help. Look for Houston to score early and tack on some insurance runs late.

MLB Prediction: Houston Astros -170
