College Football Week 6 Predictions: Will Virginia Tech recover vs. BC?

Virginia Tech vs Boston College

Will Virginia Tech rebound from its loss to Clemson last week when it visits Boston College on Saturday night?

The Matchup: Virginia Tech (4-1) at Boston College (2-3)

The Hokies’ lone blemish this season was that loss to the Tigers last Saturday night. Otherwise, Virginia Tech is off to a solid start in 2017 with a 4-1 record straight up and a 3-2 mark against the spread. On the other side, the Eagles are 2-3 both straight up and at the betting window.

According to oddsmakers, the Hokies are 16.5-point road favorites to win tonight in Chestnut Hill. The Eagles opened as 14.5-point home dogs but the line has jumped two points at most sports books. As for the total, the number hit the board at 45 but was bet up to 46.5.

Virginia Tech Hokies

Starting receiver C.J. Carroll is questionable for tonight due to a foot injury. Running back Steven Peoples (ankle) is also questionable, while cornerback Brandon Facyson (ankle) is probable.

Boston College Eagles

The Eagles could be without four starters tonight. Offensive lineman Aaron Monteiro is questionable with a lower body injury. His linemate Jon Baker, meanwhile, is out for the year due to a knee injury. Receiver Charlie Callinan is out for tonight due to a foot injury, while linebacker Connor Strachan is done for the season because of a knee injury.

The Pick

Boston College’s offense is horrendous. The Eagles rank 118th in the nation in points per game, averaging just 17.6 per contest. They’re also 117th in the country in total yards, 116th in passing, and 71st in rushing.

The Eagles also aren’t as stout defensively this year. They’re stingy against the pass, allowing just 154 yards per game through the air (12th), but are horrible against the run. Thus far, BC has been gauged for 259 rushing yards per game, which ranks 124th in Division I. The Eagles are surrendering 29 points per game, which ranks 88th.

The only thing that concerns me is Virginia Tech’s motivation level. The Hokies were smoked by Clemson last week at home and are now a huge road favorite the following week. Still, I don’t see how BC scores against Bud Foster’s defense tonight. The Eagles will likely come out hyped up under the lights, but once things settle down I like the Hokies to roll.
