Floyd Mayweather is arguably the most accomplished boxer in history, posting a perfect 49-0 record with 26 KO’s. He last fought in September of 2015, retiring after defeating Andre Berto by decision. Mayweather is a tremendous counter-fighter, using his speed to out-point most of his opponents toward the end of his career. His last seven victories were by decision. He is currently 40 years old and looking for a payday over $100 million to make this bout work.
Conor McGregor is the hot name in MMA due to his impressive striking and ability to work a microphone. He is 21-3 in his MMA career and currently holds the UFC Featherweight and Lightweight championships. McGregor has some experience in boxing as a youth, but has not competed in a professional fight. Since his last UFC bout in November, McGregor has been campaigning for a boxing match with McGregor, seeking a major payday that he can’t get in MMA. Recent reports have UFC President Dana White saying McGregor is willing to do this fight for $75 million, but now White has to reach a financial agreement with Mayweather and his Showtime representatives
Can McGregor Actually Win?
If these two were actually to settle up on finances and make the fight happen, it’s hard to see McGregor really being able to step into a boxing ring for the first time and beat the greatest to do it. McGregor, 28, would have an age advantage and probable a size advantage, as Mayweather usually competes at the 140-147-pound range while McGregor has recently been fighting at 155 with a severe weight cut the night before.
